Derzeit wird Gender Mainstreaming vorwiegend in Unternehmen und Organisationen umgesetzt. Die Geschlechterstrukturen in der establishment des Kindergartens und der Kindertagestätten zu untersuchen, erscheint aber aus Folgenden Gründen von besonderer Bedeutung. Zum einen erlernen Jungen und Mädchen im frühen Kindesalter sich in dem in westlichen Kulturen vorherrschenden approach der Zweigeschlechtlichkeit zu Recht zu finden: Da Kinder bereits im Kindergartenalter erlernen, sich in dem Erwachsenendiskurs und in den Strukturen des Geschlechterverhältnisses zu verorten, tragen sie als jüngste Mitglieder im Generationenverhältnis über das Verinnerlichen von Diskursen zu der Aufrechterhaltung von stereotypen Annahmen über Männlichkeit und Weiblichkeit des traditionellen Geschlechterverhältnisses bei.
